Arkema announces progress in increasing production capacity of blowing agent product
10 October 2022China/US: France-based Arkema has announced progress at two locations towards increasing the production capacity of its blowing agent product Forane 1233ZD. In China the group says its partner Aofan has started operation at a production plant. In the US at Calvert City, Kentucky the group has broken ground on the construction of an upgrade to a production line at its existing plant. The US$60m project is expected to be completed by early 2024. Both units are intended to increase the global availability of the Forane 1233ZD product.
The chemicals company is promoting the use of fluorinated liquid blowing agent due to its sustainability advantages. The product is used primarily in closed celled polyurethane foam for building insulation and cold chain applications. It also has applications for the thermal management of batteries in electric vehicles.
France: Sales from Arkema’s High Performance Materials division, which includes insulation products, rose by 12.5% year-on-year to Euro1.97bn in the first half of 2017 from Euro1.75bn in the same period of 2016. Its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose by 8.3% to Euro340m form Euro314m. The chemical producer mainly attributed the boost in sales to its acquisition of sealant producer Den Braven in late 2016. Overall the company also reported increases in sales and EBITDA.
Arkema completes acquisition of Den Braven
02 December 2016Netherlands: Arkema has completed its acquisition of Den Braven, a producer of sealants for insulation and construction. Together with Arkema’s subsidiary Bostik, the purchase adds to the group’s presence in the sealant market around the world. The takeover is expected to add synergies of at least Euro30m.
"We are pleased to welcome the Den Braven teams. Their state-of-the-art technologies, first-class industrial facilities and know-how widely recognized by their customers are all assets that we will continue to develop and build upon within Bostik. We are confident that this new growth platform will support our very strong ambition in adhesives," said Vincent Legros, Executive Vice President of Bostik, a subsidiary of Arkema.
Arkema high performance materials division sale rise by 2.8% to Euro2.6bn so far in 2016
10 November 2016France: Sales from Arkema’s high performance materials division, which includes insulation products, have risen by 2.8% year-on-year to Euro2.6bn in the first nine months of 2016 from Euro2.53bn. Overall, the company’s sales fell by 4% to Euro5.68bn from Euro5.92bn, although its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose by 12% to Euro946m from Euro843m. It blamed the drop in sales on the impact on sales prices of raw material variations.
Arkema announces new blowing agent for polyurethane foams
20 September 2013France: Multinational chemical producer Arkema has patented the use of Forane(R) 1233zd as a blowing agent in the manufacture of polyurethane foams. The new molecule, known in its development phase as AFA-L1, is high purity trans-1-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene, a liquid halogenated olefin. It offers improvements in energy performance and environmental benefits over existing blowing agents.
"In all of these evaluations, in several different polyurethane foam applications, Forane(R) 1233zd blowing agent has consistently demonstrated outstanding ease of use," noted Nancy Storoz, Global Business Manager for Arkema fluorochemicals foams and 134a refrigerants, "It requires minimal equipment modifications and formulation changes, while outperforming HCFCs, HFCs and hydrocarbons in terms of energy efficiency, R value, and vapor pressure."
In trials at a manufacturer of household refrigerators and freezers, an unoptimised system based on Forane(R) 1233zd blowing agent delivered a 3% improvement in energy efficiency versus HFC 245fa and surpassed 2014 DOE energy standards. In other evaluations conducted by Arkema, Forane(R) 1233zd blowing agent provided a 6% improvement in insulation value versus HFC 245fa, a 7% improvement versus HCFC 141b, and a 16% improvement versus hydrocarbons.
Target markets for Forane(R) 1233zd blowing agent include polyurethane foams used in the manufacture of household refrigerators and freezers, commercial refrigeration, spray foam, and polyurethane panels for commercial and residential building and construction applications.
