Kingspan Insulation and Saint-Gobain Construction Products among Grenfell Tower providers facing debarment from public procurement in the UK
27 February 2025UK: The government has accepted the recommendations of a public inquiry into the Grenfell Tower disaster, in which 72 people died in a fire that spread through exterior cladding systems in a residential block in London. The Guardian newspaper has reported that the inquiry recommended actions against seven different organisations that share in responsibility for the spread of the deadly fire. The inquiry's final report named these organisations as Kingspan Insulation, Saint-Gobain Construction Products, Harley Facades and testing company Exova Group, along with aluminium and bonded sheets producer Arconic Architectural Products, property development and management company Rydon Maintenance and architecture firm Studio E Architects. Additionally, the report recommended the introduction of a unified regulatory body for the construction industry and the consolidation of fire safety matters under the Department of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said "The final report exposed in stark and devastating detail the shocking industry behaviour and wider failures that led to the fire, and the deep injustices endured by the bereaved, survivors and residents.”
UK Shadow Housing and Communities Secretary Kevin Hollinrake told Parliament that criminal charges against those responsible must follow ‘where evidence allows.’
Indonesian government imposes tariff on mineral wool
12 February 2025Indonesia: A new tariff on imports of mineral wool will enter effect in Indonesia later in February 2025. China Trade Remedy Information News has reported that that the government will set the duty at US$1.24/kg of product for its first year in force. It will subsequently decline to US$1.12/kg in 2026 and US$1/kg in 2027.
The Indonesian Committee on Safeguards first initiated a safeguard investigation into mineral wool dumping in July 2023 and announced its positive ruling on the matter on 16 September 2024.
Dnipro authorities insulate six blocks of flats
14 January 2025Ukraine: City authorities in Dnipro, Eastern Ukraine, have installed insulation in six blocks of flats under the national Energodim renovations programme. Business World Magazine News has reported that work is also underway at seven further blocks of flats. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development supplied loans for the renovations.
Dnipro lies 130km inside Ukraine’s front line against the on-going Russian invasion of the country.
US: Knauf Insulation has secured US$3.28m in funding from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop and verify Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for insulation. Knauf Insulation will produce the EPDs based on comprehensive Life Cycle Assessments of its products.
Knauf North America director of sustainability Gabriela Fleury said "Transparency is embedded in our core values and a key component of our business conduct. It is imperative that our product documentation provides accurate, reliable and updated information to our stakeholders. This grant will leverage the development and improvement of EPDs, which not only allows clients to make informed decisions about lower embodied carbon products, but also indicate areas of improvement to lower greenhouse gas emissions throughout our operations. This grant represents a significant sustainability leap for all of our stakeholders. It enables us to enhance our EPD portfolio, meeting increasing market demands for product transparency."
Azerbaijan: President Ilham Aliyev has decreed the construction of the Hajigabul Industrial Park to boost Azerbaijani industry and stimulate economic growth. The industrial park will host an insulation plant, among other facilities.
Ireland: The government has announced that households eligible for funding under the existing Enhanced Defective Concrete Block (DCB) scheme can now also access funding for home insulation and energy improvements. The Irish Examiner newspaper has reported that grants of up to €37,550 are available for the purchase of materials including insulation.
Environment Minister Eamon Ryan said "The government wants to ensure that every household has the opportunity to take advantage of the green transition and benefit from homes that are warmer, healthier and more comfortable with lower energy bills and emissions.”
UK: Knauf Insulation UK & Ireland is preparing to build a €200m rock mineral wool plant to supply the UK market. The company is currently discussing with the authorities where the plant will be situated. The unit will have a production capacity of over 100,000t/yr and will use low-carbon electric melting technology. It is anticipated the additional capacity will become available in 2026.

Argentina: The Ministry of Economy has removed anti-dumping tariffs imposed upon imports of glass wool from Mexico. The decision follows an investigation requested by Saint-Gobain, according to Forbes. The government placed a tariff of 67% on the products in 2012 and this was later renewed in 2018 at the prompting of Saint-Gobain Argentina. Reportedly Saint-Gobain reached a glass wool capacity utilisation rate of 93% in 2023 and the company covers two-thirds of the market.
Knauf to transfer Russian business to local management
26 April 2024Russia: Knauf is seeking to transfer its ‘entire business in Russia’ to its local management, pending the approval of Russian authorities. The Kyiv Independent newspaper has reported that Knauf elected for the transfer in order to protect the jobs of 4000 employees in the country.
Hungary: The government plans to avail citizens of €280m in subsidy for residential refurbishments that increase efficiency, beginning in June 2024. The initiative aims to help renovate 20,000 homes, installing new insulation, boilers, doors and window frames. Local press has reported that that homeowners who contribute €2800 may receive up to €16,800. The goal of the scheme is to reduce gas consumption in line with EU policy. It has backing from the EU's Recovery and Resilience Facility, and is expected to generate €650m in additional orders for Hungarian building materials producers.
