Isover installs water meters at Runcorn insulation plant
02 August 2024UK: Saint-Gobain subsidiary Isover has installed water meters and monitoring technologies at its Runcorn insulation plant in Cheshire. The initiative aims to reduce the plant’s consumption of water by 30ML/yr, 30% of its use in 2030.
Plant sustainability champion Matt Hill said “Reducing water consumption in our production processes is central to our sustainability journey at Isover. Through investments such as these, we’re not only reducing our environmental impact but also demonstrating our unwavering commitment to building a more sustainable future." He added "By 2023, we had reduced our total water withdrawal by 22% compared to 2017, and thanks to these continuing improvements, we have already further reduced this by more than 20% in 2024 compared to 2023."
Saint-Gobain reports first-half 2024 results
26 July 2024France: Saint-Gobain reported sales of €23.5bn in the first half of 2024, down by 6% year-on-year from €25.0bn in the same period in 2023. The group reduced its capital expenditure by 5% to €583m. €255m (47%) of this was invested in new capacity, down by 7%. Group earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) dropped by 2% to €3.65bn from €3.74bn. During the reporting period, Saint-Gobain accelerated efforts to reinforce its profitable growth profile with acquisitions in the light and sustainable building materials segments in Australia, Canada, India and the Middle East. Saint-Gobain said that it exceeded 67% of operating income being generated in “high-growth geographies,” namely North America, Asia and emerging countries. It now expects “double-digit” operating margins in 2024, for the fourth consecutive full year.
Chair and CEO Benoit Bazin said "Our first-half results once again demonstrate the success of Saint-Gobain's new profile, reflecting the group's ability to adapt to different macroeconomic environments and to continue to outperform. The roll-out of our comprehensive range of sustainable and innovative solutions and the resulting enhancement in our mix, together with our decentralised organisation by country with accountability on commercial performance and on proactive cost management, have enabled us to deliver a new record operating margin and strong free cash flow generation. I am very grateful for our teams' dedication and their contribution to the group's consistent improvement in its performance."
India: Saint-Gobain India plans to double its production capacities of glass and stone wool insulation as part of a new investment phase, targeting revenues of US$4.3bn across its businesses by 2032. The Hindu newspaper has reported that this represents growth by a factor of three from 2023 levels. Saint-Gobain India noted the presence of ‘medium-sized companies in the insulation space’ as suitable targets for acquisitions. The investment phase will include total capex of US$719 – 959m from 2021 to 2025. The company had invested US$1.58bn up to the end of 2023.
Asia-Pacific and India regional CEO B Santhanam said "We have made huge investments in India, and quite a lot of them were in new plants."
North America: Wood fibre insulation producer TimberHP has entered into a North American distribution contract with CertainTeed. Under the contract, CertainTeed will distribute TimberHP’s products across North America, including as its exclusive distributor in Canada. When fully launched, the offering will include TimberHP’s loose fill, batt and rigid board insulation.
CertainTeed Canada CEO Julie Bonamy said "Driven by our purpose of making the world a better home, this exclusive partnership with TimberHP enhances the sustainable solutions we are bringing to our stakeholders throughout Canada."

Argentina: The Ministry of Economy has removed anti-dumping tariffs imposed upon imports of glass wool from Mexico. The decision follows an investigation requested by Saint-Gobain, according to Forbes. The government placed a tariff of 67% on the products in 2012 and this was later renewed in 2018 at the prompting of Saint-Gobain Argentina. Reportedly Saint-Gobain reached a glass wool capacity utilisation rate of 93% in 2023 and the company covers two-thirds of the market.
France: Saint-Gobain’s sales dropped by 6.4% year-on-year to €51bn in 2023. Meanwhile, the group’s earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) dropped by 1.7% year-on-year to €7.12bn. Despite this, it achieved average organic growth of 6.4% across its markets, buoyed by sustainable solutions, which accounted for 75% of its sales. Throughout the year, Saint-Gobain invested €223m in capital expenditure and research and development, in line with rising internal carbon prices. This contributed to a 34% reduction in its Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions compared to 2017 levels. The company used 57% renewable electricity in 2023, compared to 52% in 2022, and concluded eight new renewable energy supply deals. It aims to reach 66% renewables by 2025.
Saint-Gobain may acquire CSR for US$5.44bn
23 February 2024Australia: France-based Saint-Gobain has submitted a non-binding indicative offer of US$5.44bn for building materials producer and land banking entity CSR. CSR’s businesses include insulation producer Bradford, fibre cement systems producer Cemintel, wallboard producer Gyprock, autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) block producer Hebel and roofing producer Monier. Together, CSR’s building materials units accounted for 72% of its sales in 2023.
Saint-Gobain acquires International Cellulose Corporation
12 February 2024US: Saint-Gobain has acquired the business assets of speciality insulation products company International Cellulose Corporation (ICC). Saint-Gobain said that the acquisition strengthens its leadership in light and sustainable construction. ICC will become part of Saint-Gobain subsidiary CertainTeed's Commercial Building and Infrastructure business. ICC employs 50 people at its plant in Houston, Texas.
Saint-Gobain North America and CertainTeed president and CEO Mark Rayfield said “With plant fibre-based spray insulation products that allow commercial spaces to be more energy efficient, safe and comfortable, ICC is a perfect fit for Saint-Gobain North America. Saint-Gobain to power 20% of Italian operations renewably
09 February 2024Italy: Saint-Gobain has entered into a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Switzerland-based utilities provider Axpo Holding. Under the agreement, Axpo Holding will supply 22GWh/yr of renewable electricity from a newly built wind farm in Puglia. The deal will fulfil 11% of Saint-Gobain's Italian energy needs across 10 sites.
The latest PPA with Axpo Italia is Saint-Gobain's fifth in Italy. Collectively, these will bring the group’s reliance on renewables in its Italian operations to 20%.
Isonat to expand Mably wood fibre insulation panels plant
26 January 2024France: Saint-Gobain subsidiary Isonat is investing Euro10m in a capacity expansion to its Mably insulation wood fibre insulating panels plant. French Collection News has reported that the expansion will double the plant’s capacity to 42,000t/yr. The company says that it aims to double its sales in two years. It noted growing demand for bio-sourced materials and the availability of favourable home renovations subsidies.
