US: Saint-Gobain North America has started a program where windshield glass scraps are recycled and reused in the production of insulation. Waste glass from the company’s Saint-Gobain Sekurit’s unit at Garden Grove in California is sent to CertainTeed Insulation’s facility at Chowchilla, where it is use to make fibreglass insulation. Saint-Gobain is working with Shark Solutions on the project. The initiative started earlier in 2022.
US: Saint-Gobain plans to spend US$32m towards to upgrade to CertainTeed’s Chowchilla glasswool plant in California. The investment is part of a US$400m expansion package planned for four US plants previously announced in November 2021. The upgrade work at Chowchilla will include the addition of a new furnace and other equipment that will use less natural gas and electricity. It is the largest investment in the site since its creation in 1978. Saint-Gobain Group estimates that these improvements will reduce CO2 emissions by 4000t/yr at the site.
CertainTeed joins Better Climate Challenge initiative
04 March 2022US: CertainTeed and parent company Saint-Gobain North America have joined the US Department of Energy’s Better Climate Challenge initiative. The platform is intended to encourage companies and organisations to reduce their portfolio-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 25% or more over the next decade. Saint-Gobain’s new global Grow and Impact strategy includes a goal of reducing the company’s global carbon emissions by 33% by 2030.
CertainTeed to upgrade Chowchilla glass wool insulation plant
18 February 2022US: CertainTeed plans to invest US$32m in a capacity-expanding upgrade to its Chowchilla, California, glass wool insulation plant. The producer will install a new furnace, kiln and oxygen generation unit at the facility. It says that the upgrade will increase the plant’s capacity by 13% and reduce its carbon footprint by 4000t/yr.
CertainTeed to install 312kW solar power plant at Berlin insulation distribution centre
22 November 2021Germany: CertainTeed plans to build a 312kW solar power plant at its Berlin insulation centre. Construction is set to begin in 2022. Along with a similar project in its US plastic operations in Wayne, New Jersey, US, the plant’s construction aligns with the aims of parent company Saint-Gobain’s newly announced Grow and Impact sustainable expansion strategy.
CertainTeed CEO Mark Rayfield said “The new solar projects at our sites in Berlin and Wayne will reduce our company’s energy costs at these locations and support the broader transition to renewable, zero-carbon sources of power.”
US: The National Insulation Association (NIA) has named three insulation producers as winners of its 2021 Premier Industry Manufacturer award. Armacell, Johns Manville and Owens Corning won the nationwide award. The association’s Platinum Safety Excellence awards were presented to six insulation producers: Armacell, CertainTeed Corporation, Dyplast Products, Johns Manville, Owens Corning and Canada-based Rockwool Technical Insulation. The award is the highest category of safety excellence award at the association’s National Insulation Association Awards 2021. It awarded Proto Corporation a gold Safety Excellence award.
Executive vice president and chief executive officer Michele Jones said, “Each year, we honour our member companies that prioritise safety and make continuous improvements to their programmes, and this year we do so knowing that a strong and well communicated safety programme is more important than ever.”
The association handed over the awards virtually at its Spring Summit in mid-March 2021.
CertainTeed Canada strikes glass mineral wool insulation distribution deal with CanWel Building Materials
26 June 2020Canada: CertainTeed Canada has started a multi-year partnership with CanWel Building Materials for the distribution of glass mineral wool insulation products via CanWel’s networks. CanWel has added CertainTeed’s insulation products to its Lumber, Building Materials channel. CanWel has its headquarters in Vancouver, British Columbia and it distributes a range of building materials, lumber, and renovation products.
CertainTeed to renovate Kansas plant
15 April 2015US: Officials of CertainTeed Corp, part of Saint-Gobain, have announced that the company will renovate its plant in Kansas City, Kansas, creating more than 70 new jobs over the next three years.
CertainTeed said that it has begun renovating its plant to begin production of fibreglass insulation products during the second quarter of 2015. Greg Silvestri, president of CertainTeed Insulation, said that the company is investing more than US$30m to re-engineer the plant's furnace and restart related production lines to give it greater flexibility to support its growing business needs.
NAIMA elects new chairman
16 December 2011North America: Jeff Templeton has been elected to the position of chairman by the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association (NAIMA). He is currently vice president and general manager for CertainTeed Corporation's residential, commercial, lumber and retail insulation business. A graduate of Ball State University Templeton has 35 years' of experience in the building materials industry, holding a wide variety of key roles at CertainTeed, including in residential, commercial, industrial, sales and marketing. He is currently active within CertainTeed's government affairs efforts.
