US: Owens Corning is planning to close its fibreglass insulation plant at Eloy in Arizona due to poor residential housing market conditions. The Casa Grande Dispatch newspaper reports that the company’s decision was announced at a local council meeting in late July 2023. The Eloy plant was in operation for 15 years before being previously closed in 2010. However, in late 2021 the company announced plans to restart production at the unit. The closure will entail 36 job losses.

US: Saint-Gobain North America has started a program where windshield glass scraps are recycled and reused in the production of insulation. Waste glass from the company’s Saint-Gobain Sekurit’s unit at Garden Grove in California is sent to CertainTeed Insulation’s facility at Chowchilla, where it is use to make fibreglass insulation. Saint-Gobain is working with Shark Solutions on the project. The initiative started earlier in 2022.

US: The North American Insulation Manufacturers Association (NAIMA) has awarded R-Value Certification to Johns Manville’s fiberglass batt and narrow roll insulation products. NAIMA’s R-Value Certification program is a voluntary program that allows manufacturers to certify that the R-values for their products comply with the thermal performance requirements of the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Home Insulation Rule. The have been tested by an independent, third party laboratory and meet the thermal performance required by the FTC. As per the FTC requirements, materials are tested using a standardised test method designed by ASTM International, an organisation that establishes internationally recognised test methods and standards.

US: Knauf Insulation North America and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) have announced an investment of around US$35m at Knauf’s fibre glass inslation plant at Albion in Michigan. The upgrade is expected to convert and restart an idled production line, increasing production capacity by more than 30% and adding 34 new full-time jobs. It will use recycled bottle glass recovered through the state of Michigan’s Bottle Deposit Law as a raw material. The project is expected to be completed in late 2020.

“Keeping pace with the growing demand in the upper Midwest for quality loose-fill insulation products will be made possible through the expansion of our plant here in Albion,” said Kevin Keen, plant manager at Albion.

The Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) has approved a US$200,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant in support of the project. The MSF also approved a 100%, 15-year State Essential Services Act exemption valued at US$780,000.

US: Johns Manville (JM) plans to build a new fibreglass insulation production line at its McPherson plant in Kansas. The new line will produce its Climate Pro blowing wool product. JM will begin construction on the expansion project later in 2019 pending various governmental approvals. It anticipates the completion in early 2021. When complete, JM will employ more than 330 people in McPherson.

US: Owens Corning has received R-value certification across all its fibreglass and mineral wool batts and rolls sold in the US. This validation was awarded from the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association (NAIMA) following testing and validation by an accredited third-party laboratory.

Under the program, Owens Corning agreed to have a random selection of products regularly tested to verify compliance with the thermal performance requirements of the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) ‘Labeling and Advertising of Home Insulation’ (16 CFR Part 460) regulation.

The R-value certification represents the latest in third-party verification Owens Corning has earned across its insulation product portfolio. It will be visible on its packaging later in 2019.

US: Johns Manville has launched Cavity-Shield, a formaldehyde-free fibreglass batt insulation product intended for use in the concealed spaces of multifamily buildings. The National Fire Protection Association-approved product is being marketed as an alternative solution to sprinklers in the interstitial space. The batts are designed to serve as a passive fire solution for limiting potential flame spread between and through floors. It is also intended to reduce construction costs by reducing the time and resources required for installers to complete the job.

Serbia: Masterplast, Hungarian trading company and manufacturer of thermal insulation materials, has launched the second phase of its Euro8.4m project in Subotica, Serbia.

The project, which received a Euro2m Serbian State grant, is expected to create 205 new jobs at the plant once the expansion is complete in 2016. The third phase is scheduled to be wound up in 2017. The company has received a bank loan of Euro4.3m for the expansion, while Euro2.1m will be used from the company's own resources.

Currently the plant produces 1Mm² of fibreglass insulation. This is expected to grow to 2.5Mm² in the summer of 2016 and to 4Mm² in the autumn of 2016.

Iran: China National Building Material Company (CNBM) and the Industrial Development and Renovation Organisation of Iran, affiliated with the Industries Ministry, have signed a US$74m contract to build a 30,000t/yr fibreglass and composite manufacturing plant in Marand, East Azarbaijan Province. The capacity could be tripled if Tehran is satisfied with the performance of the Chinese company. As much as US$50m of the capital needed for equipment imports will be financed by Chinese banks while Tehran will provide the rest of the capital covering procurement of domestically-made equipment and construction costs. The project is scheduled to complete in 24 months.

US: According to local media, Owens Corning plans to open a US$90m production plant in Joplin, Missouri, which is expected to create more than 100 jobs. The plant will manufacture Thermafiber, mineral wool insulation for commercial, residential and industrial applications. Owens Corning expects the plant to be fully-operational in 2016.

"As a company that only operates in markets with attractive long-term macro drivers such as global industrial production, material substitution, US housing and energy efficiency, our decision to locate in Joplin says a lot about the region and the state. Our new location puts us close to attractive markets and accessible raw materials, a decision we believe will result in higher productivity and an increase in efficiency," said Julian Francis, president of Owens Corning Insulation. "We will benefit from Missouri's reputable workforce. As demand for mineral wool increases, we will need many hands on deck to fulfil orders and we are eager to tap into the state's talent."

As an incentive to assist Owens Corning with its expansion, the Department of Economic Development has offered a strategic economic incentive package that the company can receive if it meets strict job creation and investment criteria. The City of Joplin, the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce, Carl Junction School District, Jasper County and the Missouri Partnership also are assisting with the company's expansion.

"This announcement is terrific news for families in the region that will benefit from these new jobs," said Governor Jay Nixon. "Owens Corning's decision is a testament to our strong manufacturing sector, which has seen tremendous growth over the past few years. While some states are losing manufacturers to other countries, we are attracting new companies and selling more Missouri-made products around the globe."
