PolyStyreneLoop Cooperative launches recycling project
13 November 2017Netherlands: The PolyStyreneLoop (PSL) Cooperative has inaugurated the European expanded polystyrene (EPS) / extruded polystyrene insulation (XPS) industry’s closed-loop project for the recycling of polystyrene (PS) insulation foam waste in Amsterdam. The research is testing a concept to dissolve the recently restricted chemical, Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), from PS foam waste while also allowing for the recovery of bromine, which can then be used again for the production of new flame retardants. The PSL project is intended to help the European Union (EU) deal with an expected 20Mt of insulation material containing HBCD that will need to be disposed of in the next 50 years.
The PolyStyreneLoop demonstration plant aims to begin operations in 2018 and will have the capacity to treat up to 3300t/yr of PS waste. Once up and running, the PolyStyreneLoop project will be able to cope with incoming PS foam waste streams and produce recyclate that could be used in new PS foam insulation installations. The new initiative has been financed and built by the 56 members and supporters of the PolyStyreneLoop Cooperative. The EU has also supported it financially.
The association for European Manufacturers of Expanded Polystyrene (EUMEPS) said that recycling PS foam typically saves as much as 50% CO2 emissions compared to using it for energy recovery. It added that it believes that the technology it is testing offers an additional contribution to resource efficiency at the end-of-life phase for PS foam insulation, on top of the CO2 emissions already saved by reducing energy consumption during the long-use phase of a building.
Arkema completes acquisition of Den Braven
02 December 2016Netherlands: Arkema has completed its acquisition of Den Braven, a producer of sealants for insulation and construction. Together with Arkema’s subsidiary Bostik, the purchase adds to the group’s presence in the sealant market around the world. The takeover is expected to add synergies of at least Euro30m.
"We are pleased to welcome the Den Braven teams. Their state-of-the-art technologies, first-class industrial facilities and know-how widely recognized by their customers are all assets that we will continue to develop and build upon within Bostik. We are confident that this new growth platform will support our very strong ambition in adhesives," said Vincent Legros, Executive Vice President of Bostik, a subsidiary of Arkema.
Netherlands/Israel: ICL has completed ramping up its compaction capabilities and is now producing a range of its sustainable polymeric flame retardant at full capacity, to 12,000Mt/yr, at its Industrial Products (IP) plants in Israel and the Netherlands. The flame retardant, which is marketed by ICL IP under the brand name FR-122P, is an alternative for customers transitioning from hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD)-based flame retardants currently used by the building industry in extruded polystyrene (XPS) and expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam insulation products.
FR-122P is now available from both plants in three grades of products: powder material, EPS compacted grade and XPS compacted grade using ICL IP’s in-house compaction technology. FR-122P is manufactured by ICL IP using technology licensed from Dow Global Technologies LLC, a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company.
Synbra acquires Knauf Insulation business
25 July 2014Benelux Region: Building insulation and packaging group Synbra is consolidating its position in the Benelux Region, which encompasses Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg, with the acquisition of the local expanded polystyrene (EPS) activities of Knauf Insulation.
Synbra's subsidiary, IsoBouw Systems, is set to take over the region's Knauf manufacturing and sales operations, including an EPS plant in Oosterhout Municipality, Holland, by 1 August 2014. The Oosterhout plant produces EPS and wood wool products, although IsoBouw Systems said that it plans to close the EPS unit.
Synbra's Etten-Leur said that the acquisition is a strategic move for IsoBouw, which will continue to supply EPS insulation products from its own plants in the Wijchen, Someren and Oldenzaal Municipalities in the Netherlands.
"IsoBouw is the EPS specialist in the Benelux Region," said IsoBouw's general manager, Will Kemperman. "The acquired business unit fits perfectly with our current activities. This gives us even more space to focus on innovative product developments." The move will also strengthen the position of its existing customers in the market.
Knauf Insulation retains a glass wool production facility at Visé, Belgium as well as EPS plants in Germany at Wadersloh, Bad Waldsee and Hermeskeil. The firm also operates extruded polystyrene (XPS) plants in France, Italy and the UK.
Rockwool expands its Rockpanel cladding board business
09 March 2012Demnark/The Netherlands: Rockwool's board of directors has approved a plan to invest Euro23m in a major expansion of its Rockpanel cladding board business. The investment will be allocated to establishing a new state-of-the-art press line at the group's plant in Roermond in the Netherlands.
Rockpanel cladding boards are used as decorative and weather-protecting building elements on facades, dormers and rooflines. The main sales are in north-western Europe with Benelux, Germany, Denmark and UK accounting for the majority of the business. Sales of Rockpanel boards have seen strong double-digit growth in recent years and this is expected to continue both in the existing geographies as well as in new European markets.
Commenting on the expansion plan, CEO Eelco van Heel said, "The aesthetic and technical benefits as well as the strong sustainability profile have made the Rockpanel boards increasingly popular amongst architects and installers. We are confident that we can turn this business into a strong European player which can contribute significantly to the future of the Rockwool Group."
