New Zealand government to reduce building materials import barriers

03 April 2025

New Zealand: Parliament has passed the Building Act, allowing the import of ‘thousands’ of building products, including gypsum wallboard, insulation and cladding systems. The act allows for cited standards, according to which the Minister for Building Construction will be able to issue a notice to recognise overseas product standards and certification schemes for local use.

Fletcher Building appoints Tony Dragicevich to its board of directors

22 July 2024

New Zealand: Fletcher Building has appointed Tony Dragicevich as a non-executive director and member of its board of directors, effective from 1 August 2024. Dragicevich previously served as managing director and CEO of aluminium producer Capral, and has held leadership positions at Wattyl Group, GWA Bathrooms and Kitchens, Red Paper Group and Carter Holt Harvey Insulation. He holds a commerce degree from the University of Auckland.

Acting chair Barbara Chapman said "Tony is a highly accomplished CEO and director who brings significant experience in leading distribution and manufacturing businesses across Australia and New Zealand. His successful career in the building products sector, combined with his strong track record of delivering value for shareholders, make him an excellent addition to Fletcher Building's Board."

Sto to acquire Stoanz

14 March 2024

New Zealand: Germany-based building products and systems producer Sto has concluded a deal to acquire its New Zealand distribution partner Stoanz. Sto says that it expects to complete the acquisition on 1 April 2024.

Sto is the market leader in external wall insulation systems in New Zealand. Its other products and services include façade elements and concrete repairs.

Fletcher Building announces personnel changes

16 February 2024

New Zealand: Fletcher Building announced the retirement of its chief executive officer Ross Taylor on 14 February 2024. As part of a board renewal review, chair Bruce Hassall will also leave. Fletcher Building’s People and Remuneration Committee chair, non-executive director Barbara Chapman, will lead the search process for replacements. Handovers are scheduled to take place in October 2024.

The producer said “The board thanks Bruce and Ross for their leadership and contribution since 2017. During this period, they have led the turnaround of Fletcher Building, which has seen the core businesses becoming more focussed and profitable, with improved earnings, margins and returns.”

Kingspan cleared to acquire Conqueror

18 December 2023

New Zealand: The Commerce Commission has allowed Kingspan to proceed with its acquisition of Conqueror. The commission said that the Ireland-based group will ‘not substantially lessen’ competition in New Zealand when it completes the acquisition. This is due to the market shares belonging to competitors Bondor and Metalcraft, of which the latter plans to open a new plant in Hamilton, Waikato in 2024.

Kingspan seeks to acquire Conqueror

26 October 2023

New Zealand: Ireland-based Kingspan has applied for clearance to acquire polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation producer Conqueror. Conqueror operates the Christchurch insulation plant in Canterbury. Kingspan already supplies PIR foam core material to the plant. After the planned acquisition, Conqueror will retain its wholesale insulation distribution business.

Fletcher Building Materials increases sales and earnings in 2022 financial year

New Zealand: Fletcher Building Materials recorded consolidated sales of US$5.37bn during its 2022 financial year, up by 4.7% year-on-year from US$5.13bn in the previous year. Its net earnings also rose by 42%, to US$273m from US$193m.

The group's building materials division contributed US$1.02bn-worth (17%) of group sales. The division made capital expenditure investments of US$129m. During the financial year, its insulation subsidiaries Forman Building Systems and Tasman Insulation merged under its new Comfortech business. Comfortech will commission a new glasswool plant in mid-2023. Fletcher Building Materials says that, when operational, the new unit will help to serve increased ceiling insulation demand arising from changes to the New Zealand Building Code.

Fletcher Building Materials chief executive officer Ross Taylor said "The 2022 financial year has not been without its challenges. Global and national supply chain disruptions have continued into the third year of the Covid-19 pandemic." He added "The New Zealand Commerce Commission recently published its interim market study report into residential building supplies. The final report and recommendations will be published in December 2022 and in the meantime we will continue to work collaboratively with both the commission and the government."

New Zealand lifts Level 4 lockdown outside of Auckland and permits insulation production to resume in Auckland

09 September 2021

New Zealand: The New Zealand government has announced the lifting of Level 4 lockdown outside of Auckland. Radio New Zealand News has reported that this will enable construction to resume. Inside Auckland, insulation is among four ‘critical products’ that the government has allowed to resume production.

The Building Industry Federation (BIF) said that the government had listened to suppliers' concerns.

Knauf and USG seek clearance for merger in New Zealand

20 December 2018

New Zealand: Germany’s Knauf and US-based USG have applied to the Commerce Commission asked for clearance for the two companies to merge. USG is active in New Zealand through its 50% interest in USG Boral Building Products, which supplies gypsum wallboard, suspended ceiling components and other building materials. Knauf is active in the import and supply of products used for modular suspended ceilings and insulation in New Zealand. The proposed merger is also to be assessed by competition authorities in several jurisdictions including Australia, USA and Singapore.

Havelock Wool to use New Zealand wool for insulation products

07 August 2018

New Zealand/US: US company Havelock Wool has secured sheep’s wool supplies from Pāmu Farms of New Zealand and the New Zealand Merino Company for its insulation products. The suppliers will provide strong (coarse) wool farmed on Pāmu properties throughout the country to the insulation producer. Havelock Wool targets its products at high-end residential installations with a focus on sustainability and health benefits of its products.
