Higher prices and sales volumes drive Owens Corning’s insulation sales in first quarter of 2022
29 April 2022US: Owens Corning’s net sales from its insulation division rose by 23% year-on-year to US$859m in the first quarter of 2022 from US$700m in the same period in 2021. Its earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) grew by 15% to US$129m from US$82m. It attributed this to higher selling prices and sales volumes despite inflation and higher transport costs. Overall company net sales and adjusted EBIT increased by 23% to US$2.35bn and by 48% to US$417m respectively.
The light building materials producer also said that it made the decision to end its operations in Russia in March 2022 in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. It halted all future investments in the country in April 2022. In 2021 its net sales in Russia represented approximately 1% of the company’s consolidated net sales. The company said it is “working to expedite its exit, while remaining committed to the safety and security of its employees in the country.” Owens Corning’s insulation subsidiary Paroc operates in Russia. The group also runs a composite materials plant at Gous in Russia.
Kingspan exits Russian market
12 April 2022Russia: Ireland-based Kingspan says it has exited the Russian market and divested its operations to local management. The decision was made in early March 2022 but it took several weeks to carry out. The company said that Russia accounted for less than 1% its global operations. Following the departure Kingspan products will no longer be available for sale in Russia.
The insulation producer added that it was “Deeply saddened by the growing humanitarian crisis as a result of Russia’s unjustified attack on Ukraine and its people.” It has made a US$750,000 donation to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) for the setup of five Blue Dot Centres to assist refugees on the Ukrainian border.
Estonia: Insulation prices are reportedly 20% higher than prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine due to increased production costs. Members of the Estonian Association of Construction Entrepreneurs (ACE) have threatenened to terminate all public sector construction contracts due to untenable costs. Other building materials have risen in cost to as much as double their pre-invasion price.
Rockwool cancels Vyborg insulation plant expansion
22 March 2022Russia: Denmark-based Rockwool has cancelled plans for a Euro200m expansion to its Vyborg stone wool insulation plant in Russia. In a statement, the company said that it would continue its operations in the country, while also respecting international sanctions. Rockwool employs 1200 people in Russia, 10% of its total employees.
In defending its decision to maintain ordinary operations, the producer said “For Rockwool, there is no contradiction in standing side by side with the Ukrainian people and at the same time standing side by side with our Russian colleagues.” It added that it has donated to the Danish Red Cross to support Ukrainian victims of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
TechnoNicol to build new stone wool plants in Russia and Kazakhstan
03 February 2022Russia: TechnoNicol plans to invest around Euro350m towards building two stone wool plants as well as other expanded production in other business areas including agricultural applications. A 1.5Mm3/yr stone wool plant will be built in the Novgorod special economic zone, according to the AK&M Information Agency. Construction of a new 1.4Mm3/yr stone wool plant near Almaty in Kazakhstan is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2022. Both project have a combined an investment of Euro127m. Additionally, the insulation producer is reportedly looking for a site to build an additional stone wool plant in the far east of Russia.
The company also plans in 2022 to launch a new production line for stone wool substrates for use in greenhouse farming at a plant in the Rostov region. Around Euro6m will be spent on the upgrade. Once complete the line will be able to supply the Southern Federal and South Caucasus districts. It will be TechnoNicol’s third production line for mineral wool substrates, joining plants at Ryazan and Tatarstan.
TechnoNicol to upgrade Khabarovsk stonewool insulation plant
22 October 2021Russia: TechnoNicol plans to carry out an upgrade at its Khabarovsk basalt mineral wool insulation plant. The planned project will fully automate production at the plant and double its capacity. The producer expects the upgrade to improve safety, sustainability and product quality.
Rockwool to install new line at Vyborg insulation plant
21 October 2021Russia: Rockwool plans to install a new mineral wool production line at its Vyborg insulation plant in Leningrad oblast. The producer says that the expanded plant will have 50% lower CO2 emissions than before the expansion due to an efficiency increasing upgrade to its melting technology.
Rockwool plans to invest Euro200m in expansions and efficiency improving upgrades in Russia ‘in the coming years,’ creating 70 new jobs.
Saint-Gobain acquires Duraziv in Romania
20 May 2021Romania: France-based Saint-Gobain has acquired Duraziv, a producer of adhesives and other construction chemicals. The group said that the purchase would allow it to expand its range of interior and exterior finishing solutions. It also hopes the move will drive an improvement in the energy efficiency of buildings in Romania thanks to external thermal insulation solutions (ETICS) based on locally-produced stone wool and mortars. This latest addition follows the recent acquisition of Russia-based Adhesive Scientific and Production Company, a producer of polyurethane (PUR) and epoxy products.
Saint-Gobain plans 50,000t/yr stone wool plant in Siberia
19 February 2021Russia: Saint-Gobain has announced plans to build a 50,000t/yr-capacity stone wool plant in Siberia. The company says that the decision aims to help it better meet the growing needs of consumers in Siberia, Kazakhstan and the Far East. It will produce the insulation material using basalt. The total estimated cost of the project is around US$35m, with commissioning scheduled for 2023.
Russia, Ukraine and Commonwealth of Independent States regional chief executive officer Antoine Peyrude said, “The new production complex will allow us to better respond to the demands of the local market, whose demand for innovative energy-efficient solutions is constantly growing.”
Penoplex holds ground-breaking ceremony for new insulation board plant in Azerbaijan
17 December 2019Azerbaijan: Russia’s Penoplex has held a ground-breaking ceremony for a new insulation board plant it is building in Hajigabul district. The project is part of an interstate partnership between Azerbaijan and Russia, according to the Trend News Agency. Penoplex operates eight plants in Russia, one plant in Kazakhstan and one plant in Uzbekistan.
