Va-Q-Tec’s insulation products sales rise in 2018

12 March 2019

Germany: Va-Q-Tec’s revenue grew by 8% year-on-year to Euro50.7m in 2018 from Euro46.9m in 2017. Sales from its Products business, including vacuum insulation panels (VIP) and phase change materials (PCM), increased by 12% to Euro20.1m from Euro18m. However, its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) fell by 58% to Euro3m from Euro7.2m. It blamed the fall in earnings on a rise in sales from its lower-margin Products business and investment costs in the company generally.

“Even though business trends in 2018 fell short of our expectations, the outlook at the end of the year brightened considerably. We have completed all of our major growth investments, we have achieved important progress with projects for major customers,” said Stefan Döhmen, the chief financial officer (CFO) of Va-Q-Tec.

Va-Q-Tec hosts research project looking at new vacuum insulation panel products

29 June 2017

Germany: Va-Q-Tec AG is hosting a research project entitled ‘THECore’ that will examine thermally efficient, cost-reduced nanostructured foams for vacuum insulation panels (VIP). The project is linked to the Society and Enterprise Panel of the Individual Fellowship of Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) of the European Union (EU). The main research topic of THECore is the development of new VIP products based on a new generation of core materials. Sumteq, the project’s second supporting company, will supply these.

Va-Q-Tec will carry out product tests and qualifications of the new materials. A starting meeting with both participant institutions was held on 22 June 2017, where researcher Flávia Almeida from Portugal introduced the main objectives of the project. She will lead the research for two years and will be supported by the MSCA.

MSCA are a set of major mobility research grants created by the EU and European Commission to support research in the European Research Area. It is currently financed through the Eighth Framework Program for Research and Technological Development (Horizon 2020) and belongs to the so-called first pillar ‘Excellent Science.’

European Committee for Standardisation expected to draft final standard for vacuum insulation panels technology by end of 2016

19 July 2016

Belgium: VIPA International, the Vacuum Insulation Panel Association, has said that the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) is set to complete a final draft standard for the for the use of vacuum insulation panels (VIP) technology in building applications by the end of 2016.

“The VIP industry is looking forward to the publication of this standard. This was one of main motors driving the creation of the association and in the past year we commissioned three studies that will hopefully accelerate some of the technical discussions within Working Group 11. Standards are key tools to increase customer trust in new products so we hope this will impact very positively on the market acceptance of vacuum insulation panels,” said president of VIPA International, Roland Caps

The CEN Technical Committee 88 (thermal insulating materials and products) Working Group 11 (vacuum insulation products - VIP) is responsible for drafting the buildings specification for the factory made vacuum insulated panels. The Technical Committee 88, WG 11, has agreed on a general procedure to extrapolate the results of accelerated aging tests, both for silica and non-silica core materials like glass fibres. This allows determining the mean thermal conductivity values throughout the considered service lifetime of the panels, which for applications in the construction industry, similar to other insulation materials in this industry, is set to 25 years.

VIPA International plans to extend the procedures defined by the CEN TC88/WG11, which apply only to buildings, to other applications where VIPs are used like appliances, hot water tanks and containers or boxes for temperature sensitive goods. A separate quality and testing regulation already exists and is being reviewed together with an approved Inspection and Certification Body. A special VIP Quality Mark will be awarded to VIP manufacturers that comply with these rules.
