Insulation industry news from Global Insulation
Europe: Knauf Insulation has joined Daikin, Danfoss, Rockwool, Saint-Gobain, Signify and Velux to promote building energy efficiency in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The six companies have signed a memorandum that commits them to work together to encourage cooperation and allocation of ‘personal and financial resources’ on a country level to establish and maintain national associations equipped with the expertise to engage in public debates effectively and the skills to inspire better policies.
Radek Bedrna, Knauf Insulation’s managing director for Eastern Europe and Middle East, said “This memorandum is a powerful commitment to tackle the building and energy challenges facing CEE. It will provide the campaigning initiatives with the needed support to drive the policy changes that will be transformational for building renovation in the region.” He added that the region has five out of seven European Union (EU) countries with the highest gas saving potential arising from insulating residential buildings. Two thirds of the 43.6m homes in single- and multi-family house in the CEE region were reportedly built before 1989 and are energy inefficient.
The companies signed the document at the Central and Eastern European Energy Efficiency Forum (C4E) in late May 2023. The forum, which brought together more than 240 public authority representatives with advocacy groups, non-government organisations (NGO) and private companies, called on policy makers to roll out well-designed subsidy schemes with a long-term outlook.
UK/Ireland: Knauf Insulation UK & Ireland has launched ‘OmniFit Slab 32’, a 32 lambda glass mineral wool insulation slab product for use in light steel frame systems (SFS) as part of a rainscreen façade or other external wall build-ups.
Liliya Luke, the Glass Mineral Wool Product Manager at Knauf Insulation, said “We have launched OmniFit Slab 32 to help our customers deliver the low U-values required, without compromising on fire safety, acoustic performance or sustainability.” He added, “Specifiers can now optimise their rainscreen façade systems by adding the benefits of glass mineral wool to their build-up - delivering acoustic performance, and reduced embodied carbon compared to rock-only solutions, with an insulation specification that remains completely non-combustible.”
The new product is primarily designed for use with ‘Rocksilk RainScreen Slab’ when used in rainscreen applications, and is suitable for use in the external wall systems of all residential buildings over 11m tall and relevant residential buildings over 18m tall. It is the latest addition to Knauf Insulation's OmniFit range of glass mineral wool roll and slab products.
Serbia: Knauf Insulation Serbia has completed a Euro20m upgrade to its Surdulica stone wool plant. Production has restarted at the unit, according to SeeNews. The company has replaced equipment on the production line and chimney, and installed a new palletisation machine and a desulfurisation system, thereby increasing the recycling capacity of the factory. The investment also includes a new logistics building and a truck parking area. The company plans to hire 15 new employees from May 2023 to support the changes.
Malaysia: Knauf Insulation APAC’s Johor Bahru mineral wool plant has made its first export of unfaced glass wool to Japan. The company said that it has obtained Certification for Japanese Industrial Standards and is now able to begin supplying customers in that market. The 75,000t/yr Johor Bahru plant officially opened in mid-2022. However, the unit reportedly started export glass wool products to Australia in 2021.
Kazakh government claims that Knauf Group will relocate Russian business to Kazakhstan
03 April 2023Kazakhstan/Russia: The government of Kazakhstan says that it now expects Germany-based Knauf Group to relocate its Russian business to Kazakhstan. It says that this is due to the on-going Russian invasion of Ukraine, which initially led Knauf to freeze investments in the sanctioned state and suspend its trade between it and the EU from March 2022.
Deutsche Welle News has reported that Knauf Group ‘did not confirm’ the Kazakh government’s contention. In defending its decision to so far remain in Russia, Knauf Group’s chair Alexander Knauf said “It’s not about money for us, it’s about 4000 employees. Loyalty to these people means to me that I won’t send them off into an uncertain future.” Russia reportedly contributed 10% of the group's turnover in 2022.
Romania: Knauf Insulation has broken ground on the construction of a second insulation plant at the site of its existing Târnăveni mineral wool insulation plant. SeeNews has reported that, when commissioned in 2024, the new plant will have a production capacity of 100Mm2/yr of mineral wool insulation. It will also create 100 new jobs. Knauf Insulation said that the project will bring its total investments in the Târnăveni site to Euro135m.
US: The National Insulation Association (NIA) has named Armacell, Johns Manville, Knauf Insulation, Owens Corning and Rockwool Technical Insulation as its Premier Industry Manufacturers 2023. The designation celebrates leadership and industry advocacy by NIA members.
NIA executive vice president and CEO Michele Jones said “Congratulations to these five leading companies! Each year, I am impressed by the way these NIA member companies find new, innovative and tangible ways to amplify the message about the power of insulation and their commitment to NIA. These manufacturers are setting themselves apart from the pack by demonstrating the importance of involvement and leadership. We look forward to promoting them all throughout 2023.”

13 February 2023Romania: Knauf Insulation’s revenue grew by 40% year-on-year to Euro27.2m in 2022 from Euro19.4m in 2021. It attributed this to increased sales volumes and higher pricing, according to the Ziarul Financiar newspaper.
