US: Owens Corning commenced construction of its planned US$60m Russellville extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation plant in Arkansas. When commissioned in 2025, the plant will employ 50 people and produce Owens Corning’s Foamular NGX XPS insulation. Local press has reported that the move represents the company’s third expansion in Arkansas since the start of 2022. It has been present in the state since 1985.

Owens Corning vice president and general manager, foam insulation, Rodney Wideman said "This new plant and today's groundbreaking ceremony represents commitment to our customers' growth and the Russellville community.”

Italy: Masterplast inaugurated its new Euro3m Calerno insulation plant in Emilia Romagna on 28 November 2023. Once fully operational, the producer expects the plant to add Euro15m to its annual sales.

Kazakhstan: Russia-based TechnoNICOL says that it will invest US$107m in the construction of the upcoming Almaty stone wool insulation plant, up by 82% from its previous estimate of US$59m. The producer began building the plant in August 2023. At that time, it was due to have a production capacity of 1.4Mm³/yr when operational.

Interfax has reported that TechnoNICOL’s head of mineral insulation Vasily Tkachev said "We have fairly big plans for the next three years. We see that the construction sector is growing, construction is being actively supported by the government. We feel the state's support and are moving forward, so that when there is demand there will be product. We're forced to open production earlier, forecasting growing demand."

Hungary: Masterplast reported sales worth Euro114m during the first nine months of 2023. This represents a year-on-year decline of 31% from Euro164m in the corresponding period in 2022. The producer’s earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) losses were Euro2.93m, compared to a positive figure of Euro19.3m. During the third quarter of 2023, sales declined in Hungary by 45% and across its export markets by 26%. They rose by 21% in Poland, by 8% in Croatia and by 2% in Ukraine.

Masterplast attributed its sales decline to low demand due to global inflation and rising interest rates amid on-going lockdowns, energy crises and war in Ukraine, while energy-saving renovation initiatives have also been subject to delays. The company set a savings target of Euro2m/yr and laid off 250 employees, including 210 from its plants in Serbia. It completed the construction of new expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS) capacity in Italy and Serbia, which it expects to bring online later in 2023.

Uzbekistan: Russia-based TechnoNICOL to invest US$13.1m in the construction of a new extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation plant in Angren. AK&M News has reported that the plant will have a capacity of 300,000m²/yr. It will produce TechnoNICOL’s range of 20 – 120mm-thick XPS insulation. Construction will commence in 2024 and the plant will employ 50 people when operational.

Croatia: Italy-based public-private investment company Simest has acquired a 44% stake in Ediltec Croatia for US$2.1m. SeeNews has reported that the new funds will go towards Ediltec Croatia’s construction of its planned 250,000m²/yr Lepoglava insulating panel plant.

South Korea: KCC has started operating its new second 48,000t/yr glass wool production line at its Gimcheon plant. Chair Chung Mong-jin and chief executive officer Jeong Jae-hun attended a ceremony marking the achievement in late August 2023. The company says that the new line is the largest single one of its type in the country.

US: Owens Corning is planning to close its fibreglass insulation plant at Eloy in Arizona due to poor residential housing market conditions. The Casa Grande Dispatch newspaper reports that the company’s decision was announced at a local council meeting in late July 2023. The Eloy plant was in operation for 15 years before being previously closed in 2010. However, in late 2021 the company announced plans to restart production at the unit. The closure will entail 36 job losses.

US: CertainTeed has completed an upgrade at its Athens glasswool insulation plant in Georgia. Equipment used in the production of loose-fill insulation has been updated, including modifications to the unit’s loose-fill recycling machine. In addition, the plant has installed several new pieces of equipment, including a new baler, water sub-metering system, three air compressors, efficiency pumps on cooling towers and a cooling wind fan. The modifications are expected to save over 7300MWh/yr of energy and 76Ml/yr of water, and reduce landfill waste by over 5000t/yr.

The subsidiary of Saint-Gobain North America previously announced in late 2021 that it was spending US$30m towards building a new insulation production line at the Athens plant. At the time it said that increased production was scheduled to start in late 2023.

Croatia: Knauf Insulation plans to invest Euro120m in an expansion to its Novi Marof mineral wool insulation plant. Poslovni Dnevnik News has reported that the expansion will double the plant's capacity and create 70 new jobs. This is in line with Knauf Insulation's sustainability strategy. Work will commence in late 2023 and reach completion before the end of 2025.
