DuPont to launch extruded polystyrene foam insulation product with lower greenhouse gas emissions
17 July 2020US: DuPont plans to launch new extruded polystyrene foam insulation products in its Styrofoam brand with reduced global warming potential (GWP) from the start of 2021 to meet its 2030 Sustainability Goals and comply with adopted and upcoming state and provincial hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) regulations throughout the US and Canada. The company also expects a reduction in embodied carbon to be reflected in an updated Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), which will be available with the new products.
"We are taking a thoughtful, phased approach to launching this latest Styrofoam innovation to ensure we are providing a sustainable, code-approved solution that does not sacrifice the performance our customers have come to trust," said Tim Lacey, Global Vice President & General Manager, DuPont Performance Building Solution.
Jub to open new Styrofoam plant in Serbia
10 September 2015Serbia: Slovenia's chemical group Jub, which celebrates its 140th anniversary in 2015, is expanding its production abroad with the launch of a new styrofoam thermal insulation plant in Šimanovci near Belgrade on 10 September 2015.
The new plant cost Euro5.6m, while the total investments made by Jub in Serbia, where it has been present since 2004, have been estimated at Euro27m. The group includes 12 companies that operate on more than 12 markets worldwide. It expanded its product range to insulation materials in 2012.
UK: Following a successful pilot launch during 2014, Dow Building Solutions has announced the commercial roll-out of XENERGYTM, a brand new, flame-retarded, XPS roof insulation product. In a departure from the blue STYROFOAMTM boards that the company is widely known for, the XENERGYTM boards manufactured by Dow Building Solutions' King's Lynn production site in Norfolk County, will be steel grey in colour.
Dow, the inventor of STYROFOAM, has developed XENERGY to achieve a significantly improved λ insulation performance and to deliver a global warming potential (GWP) of less than five. Through combining a manufacturing process which uses CO2 as the blowing agent and adding infra-red blocking particles to scatter and reflect heat radiation within the foam board, λ values have been increased by 11%.
XENERGY SL, the first XENERGY product available in the UK, is designed to offer highly moisture-resistant flat roof insulation at thinner thicknesses than conventional XPS alternatives. XENERGY SL offers 4mW thermal conductivity gains in various thicknesses.
"The UK is leading the way with the commercial roll-out of XENERGY, a product that has numerous benefits, including significantly improved thermal performance," said Chris Gimson, head of commercial at Dow Building Solutions. "It signifies a new era for the business and demonstrates our commitment to formulating and manufacturing the highest standard insulation materials."
Dow Chemical to close four insulation plants worldwide
04 April 2012US: Dow Chemical Company, the world's second-largest chemical producer, plans to close four plants producing Styrofoam. Dow Chemical will close plants that make the insulation material in Portugal, Hungary and the US state of Illinois and it will idle a Styrofoam facility in the Netherlands.
The decision comes as part of a cost saving exercise, including a cut of 900 jobs and a US$350m restructuring charge, to counter weakness in the European construction market and exit a loss-making business in Brazil. The moves are aimed at saving US$250m/yr.
Dow Chemical had cut production during the final quarter of 2011 to levels not seen since early 2009. It cited concerns about ebbing demand in Europe and the outlook in China during a recovery that Chief Executive Andrew Liveris described as 'jagged'. The job cuts represent around 1.7% of Dow's global work force. The effort is part of a broader streamlining program unveiled by the chemical giant in 2011.
